Welcome to Farmington, New Mexico.
Farmington is a city located in San Juan County, New Mexico, at the confluence of the San Juan, Animas, and La Plata rivers. A distribution point for the Navajo and Ute Mountain reservations, it is the trade center of an oil, natural gas, and irrigated farm area. The city itself has light industry. San Juan College is in Farmington. Aztec Ruins National Monument and Salmon Ruins are nearby. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 37,844.
Located in the northwest corner of the state, Farmington, New Mexico is a wonderful place to live and do business. Farmington is part of San Juan County which covers 5,560 square miles. This is an area larger than the entire state of Connecticut. There are fertile river valleys surrounded by high desert, rolling plateaus, mesas, and mountain ranges. The Animas, La Plata, and San Juan Rivers flow through Farmington, accounting for two-thirds of the surface water in New Mexico. An average of 273 sunny days per year means that year round outdoor activities are very enjoyable in Farmington. The annual average rainfall is 7.5 inches and the average snowfall is 12.3 inches. The average high temperature in January is 46.1 degrees with an average annual high temperature in July of 93.2 degrees. The average annual low temperature in January is 19 degrees with an average annual low temperature in July of 60.2 degrees.

The number of permits issued for building construction and renovation in February was down more than 10 percent below last year, however, the area did see an improvement in new home starts.
New Farmington City Council takes reins
A new mayor and city councilor and an incumbent councilor were sworn in Monday in City Hall as Bill Standley and George Sharpe were thanked for their service to the city of Farmington.

Students in Sarah Menapace-Walker's eighth-grade current events class at Heights Middle School still are a handful of years away from being able to cast a ballot.
